Cutlass Bearings for a 2-1/4" Shaft
We list eight Exalto cutlass bearings for a 2-1/4" (57.15 mm) propeller shaft, in phenolic, brass and GRP. They fit housing bores of 3" (76.2 mm), 3-1/8" (79.38 mm) and 3-1/4" (82.55 mm), and every one is 9" (228.6 mm) long. The nominal wall thickness, half the difference between housing bore and shaft, runs from 9.53 mm to 12.7 mm.
Of these, three are in Australian stock (two phenolic and one GRP), with same-day dispatch on orders placed by 2pm AEST on a business day. You can pre-order the other five, with dispatch estimated at 3 to 4 weeks. Prices run from $390.00 to $720.00 including GST, and Express Post delivery within Australia is free.
The nearest metric shaft size we list, 55 mm (2.165"), is 2.15 mm smaller and takes different bearings. Keep the shaft size in the unit it was made to: 2-1/4" is 57.15 mm, and metric and imperial bearings of a similar size are not interchangeable.

How to choose a bearing for a 2-1/4" shaft
Measure the housing bore and the length of the bearing you are replacing, then find that combination below. Bearings that share a housing bore and length differ in shell material, tolerances and availability.
- 3" (76.2 mm) housing, 9" (228.6 mm) long: phenolic IPSF18 (in stock, $390.00), brass IBSF18 (dispatch in 3 to 4 weeks, $670.00), GRP IGSF18 (dispatch in 3 to 4 weeks, $460.00)
- 3-1/8" (79.38 mm) housing, 9" (228.6 mm) long: phenolic IPSF18+1 (in stock, $390.00), brass IBSF18+1 (dispatch in 3 to 4 weeks, $720.00), GRP IGSF18+1 (dispatch in 3 to 4 weeks, $525.00)
- 3-1/4" (82.55 mm) housing, 9" (228.6 mm) long: phenolic IPSF18+2 (dispatch in 3 to 4 weeks, $390.00), GRP IGSF18+2 (in stock, $525.00)
Phenolic, brass and GRP describe the outer shell, and each has a grooved nitrile rubber lining. The non-metallic phenolic shell avoids galvanic corrosion between the shell and a metal housing. Exalto advises against fitting brass directly into steel or aluminium housings. Exalto identifies GRP as suitable for steel and aluminium stern tubes as well as compatible non-metallic housings. More about each: phenolic cutlass bearings, brass cutlass bearings and GRP cutlass bearings.
Matching sizes is the first check, not the last: confirm the shell material, the housing's condition and the retention method for your boat. The measuring guide explains what to record, or contact us with your measurements.
